NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

Surrounded by bush, at Warblers Retreat we cannot help but be aware of the nature that around us.  With that comes a sense of responsibility to respect the natural world and to do our best to protect what is on our doorstep.

Native Bush

Our five acre property comprises of regenerating farmland, with gullies hosting large native pongas (tree ferns), Tanikaha and Nikau. With natural springs flowing through the property, there’s a plethora of native birds and wildlife. We actively protect and enhance this bush by removing pest plants and animals, and by planting more native plants to encourage the bird life.

Native Gardens

With mostly native and subtropical plantings, framed by natural landscape materials such as bamboo, wood and stone, the grounds provide many plants for the native birds.  The native Wood Pigeon (Kereru) is particularly fond of the many guava planted around the property, while many of the fruits that are grown to feed the occupants they tend to be shared with the local birds.

Organic Gardens

Organic herbs, vegetables and fruit are grown on the property and are supplied to guests as they are available. Recycling is carried out by way of a Bokashi bin, worm farm composting and chickens who devour the food scraps providing fresh eggs and manure, (a valuable ingredient in providing nutritious fruit and vegetables off the property).

Guest Supplies

We use biodegradable eco-friendly cleaning materials. There’s a range of indoor pot plants to ensure healthy indoor air quality.

We source our soaps, shampoo, conditioner and bath oils from New Zealand Forest & Bird. Every purchase of these products carries a donation back to the NZ Forest & Bird Society.
It is our philosophy to try our best to do our bit for the environment by recycling of as much packaging, cardboard, paper, tin, cans plastic and glass as possible. We provide bins for guests to use.
Rainwater is collected for use within the property and where possible, recycled waste water is used for garden irrigation.
As we rely on rainwater, we can reduce usage by minimising the washing of linen, flushing toilets only when necessary and not leaving taps running.
We use bio-degradable washing powder and dish washing products.
We encourage guests to re-use towels to reduce the impact of washing materials and water on the environment.
Using solar lights in the garden and switching off lights and appliances when we are out.
Installing low energy LED light bulbs wherever possible and encouraging energy efficient use of resources.
We regularly upgrade appliances to more energy-efficient models.
